Mydolls - Soldiers Of A Pure War

Mydolls song on the seminal “Cottage Cheese From The Lips of Death” compilation.

This Houston, Texas band originated in 1978 and probably would draw comparisons to the Slits or Raincoats solely based on their gender. Yeah, the rhythms and drums in this cut lend themselves to Slits comparisons but I think they have more of an angular approach than the Slits. Think Gang of Four or the Au Pairs. Less of a call and response approach to the lyrics as well. Musically they sound more to me like the NYC bands that originated in the brief space between punk and post-punk. But unlike No Wave bands like Mars or Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, I sense an appreciation of Latin rhythms and beats rather than this idea of “destroying all music”. A pretty unique band whose songs are hit or miss but worth checking out.

To be honest, this song doesn’t really fit the vibe of the “Cottage Cheese” comp. It lacks that demented, drug-addled, fucked up quality the other bands either embodied or did a good job fitting in with. To me, this is the “post-punk” song on the album.

And God knows, post-punk was and is and will always be the most important music that is ever recorded.

Stick Men With Ray Guns “Hymn For The Fallen Angel”

- Some People Deserve To Suffer

Musically similar to Flipper but Stick Men With Ray Guns easily make Flipper sound like easy listening.

The Texas punk scene in the early 1980’s was FUCKED UP. Like fucked up man. Drugs, violence, insanity. Something about Texas is wrong in general so just imagine the depths of depravity that teenage rebellion sunk to.

Stick Men With Ray Guns.
I was first introduced to this legendary Dallas, Texas punk band via the Cottage Cheese From The Lips of Death compilation record which I bought in high school. It sounded good on acid. It’s a good soundtrack for a biker turnout.
The band formed in 1981 when Bobby Soxx of the Teenage Queers joined forces with Clarke Backer from Bag of Wire. At their very first show they opened for Black Flag at Zero’s in Ft Worth, TX in early 1981. Fuck yeah!
Stick Men With Ray Guns recorded very little and never played outside Texas but opened for such punk luminaries as the Dead Kennedys, T.S.O.L., Bad Brains, the Butthole Surfers, the UK Subs and even the fucking Misfits.
Stick Men With Ray Gun shows were known for being incredibly confrontational and aggressive. They would intentionally perform songs which they barely knew or never rehearsed. Lead singer Bobby Soxx would start fights, urinate on other bands or shove the microphone up his ass and leave it for the next band to sing into.
Sadly, after spending time in both prison and a mental hospital, alcohol got the best of Bobby and he died of alcohol poisoning in 2000.
