Typical Girls by The Slits / Cut / Island / 1979 / UK
One of the key-feminist post-punk groups. What started out as your usual three-chord-rama-dama-ding-dong punk outfit evolved into a dubby, scratchy and skippy —the band itself described their style as “girl rhythm”— art pop group. The band, and especially the singer Ari Up, were loud advocates of women being just as capable as men. But Typical Girls isn’t here just because of its message concerning traditional gender roles, but because it’s a fine song! Just clock that bass, and Viv Albertine’s guitar swirls and the playful chorus. If you don’t feel as light as a feather after hearing this song, there’s probably something wrong with you. ~O.
one of those songs, if I had to make a list of songs that are perfect, would undoubtedly score very high on the list.
